Just a little one....

If you import a favourite character and your the background layer is hidden then they come in it that multicoloured texture we had when loading scenes with hidden layers.

It not much of an issue as you can just delete, enable the layer and re-import, but you may want to tidy it up....

Another little one....

Could you get the layers which you have selected to render to save with the set please.

I've added a bug and improvement request for these things.

I'm getting a flashing black and white bar across the top of my TGA frames when DoF is on. You can't see it on the preview window or the camera windows, only on the rendered output.

Moving or static camera, same result.

We're looking in to this one. There's a larger consideration to get groups on the render layers window. Part of it is the technical side of how we actually manage the data in the backend but generally it comes down to a few questions:

a) What if objects that are split over different layers are grouped together?
b) If you ungroup where do all those objects go? (background layer, layer they were on?)
c) What if you only want to remove one object from a group?

We've some advancements to the grouping system as a whole that might solve this problem. No guarantees though

I've put a bug in the system for a dev to look at, I'm not sure if we can do anything about this though (could be wrong here!) as the way effects are applied in the game engine make it difficult to change them.

If you are using TGA frames, I'd go for exporting a depth pass and doing DoF post process in your video editor.

How about a pop up that asks the user which layer they want it on when grouping or ungrouping?

It's an option, usually it's best to avoid interrupting a users work flow in the best practice UI design so there might be a better solution. Imagine if you kept making a mistake in the group selection and ever time you ungroup you need to select a layer?

The main problem is with selecting an object within a group. At the moment, you can click on an object in the layers window and it selects it in your scene. Similarly, you can select an object in the scene and it highlights it in the layers window.

However, the Muvizu backend doesn't allow an individual object that is within a group to be selected; it can only select the group as a whole. So I have to either leave it as it is until we find a solution, or remove the feature of selecting and highlighting from within the layer window (and then maybe put it back in once we find a better solution). I think leaving it as is for the moment is the lesser of two evils. For that I apologise, but we are still looking into it.

Ziggy, can you make a simple set to reproduce this? Does it only happen on this set? If it happens on your simple scene can you email me the .SET file?

I think leaving them in the group is fine - you can't select individual objects within a group so I don't see why you should be able to in the layers window. Could you not just display the group as you do individual objects. Personally I wouldn't bother supporting objects within a group being on separate layers. So...

  • If objects are in a group then show the group on the layers window (at the moment although it's on the default background layer it doesn't appear at all in the layers window)
  • Support moving the group between layers
  • If you attempt to group objects that are on different layers then ask which layer you want that group on and move them all to that layer

If you want objects on different layers then users will just have to ungroup them.

The main issue is that you can't find which layer objects are on if they're in a group.

Yes and no... I made a simple set to demonstrate this, and for the first time I could see the flickering on the preview window but the rendered output was now clean - Whaaaaa? Tried a different set, no problems, tried the original set and again no problems - I can't reproduce it, and yet I've been banging my head off it for 2 days. Hopefully it was just some update issue on my machine, or it might be a 'per-session' thing, or whatever - I'll let you know if it comes back, thanks anyway.

I have a problem - I need smoke in a room. The Muvizu smoke is very nice when you use a better texture, but all of Muvizu's effects kill DoF (very efficiently). So I can have smoke or DoF, but never both. I had hoped that particular issue would have been fixed by now since it renders all effects essentially useless to those of us that like to use the cameras as, y'know, proper cameras. At least now I've got layers to try to get around it, but it would be SO much simpler if you could just fix whatever it is that wipes out the DoF around effects. Please

Oh yes, I can't believe this hasn't been mentioned before! I've always had issues with this.

I just tried to use a spotdark in a set - lol, totally screwed up. All objects reflect the dark as pure white! You can see it in the preview window and the camera windows. Bulb or spot, same effect. Oh dear...

Forgot to mention - only happens when our old friend DoF is turned on

The default names of the layers have changed from "Layer1" to "Layer 1" etc. Grrrrrr........

Although please don't change them back as I will have gone through all my composite shots rebuilding them by then.

Trying to get around the DoF issue (on the set I sent in), I changed my set to DX9, and the camera outputs are now all black.

It would save a lot of time if you could move object between layers en masse.

At the moment you can select a range of objects within the layers window, but changing the layer when they are all selected only changes the layer for one object.

I would like it to change the layer for all selected.

And please, please allow groups to appear in the layers windows - you have no idea how tedious this is !

I've just had to ungroup around 100 groups and move single objects manually......
