It would be extremely helpful if you would provide the facility to remap keys ~ especially for movement.

Reasons...

1) The keys and mouse mapping you have chosen is neither intuitive and nor is it 'standard' in relation to most other programmes ~ e.g. left and right cursor keys are 'traditionally' for panning, not rotating; up and down cursor move forward and back; left mouse is 'usually' rotate and tilt; right mouse is 'usually' raise and lower. Most other programmes I regularly use follow this formula and it would be far less confusing, with fewer errors, if key mapping could be 'tuned' to both the users preference and commonality with other programmes.

2) The keys and mouse mapping you have chosen can also be significantly awkward to use for the disabled, as I am ~ This leaves me with a double disadvantage in combination with 1) above when more complex directions are being input with resulting frustration from mistakes.

It would be Great if you would address this issue when able ~ and I would be extremely grateful :-)

WASD - all gamers know these keys are for forward/back and sidestep - but not in Muvizu, for some reason. Y4ArtU is dead right here. I had to program my Saitek GM2 to be able to restore WASD, but it would be easier if we could just assign the keys ourselves. Please!

Erm... isn't the movement already: WS = Forward/Back, AD = Sidestep left/right?

Regards the configuration aspect of it. Yeah, it's something we'll add to our list of things to do. So, I'm sure we'll get around to it at some point, but no idea when.

Ummm... Nope!!!
Left and Right Cursor rotates - not sidesteps. :-)

Right Button ALSO rotates.

Only way to side step is both buttons.

Meanwhile, I await the Devs addressing this with baited breath and expectation.

The cursor keys rotate, yes. But as mcmillan-ra said, the A and D keys sidestep in the traditional first-person shooter way.

The usual way to navigate is using WASD to move forwards, backwards and sideways, and use the mouse with the right button to turn and steer. Up and down is achieved with the Q and E keys.

Ummm... Yes, I accept what you say but you were not able to take into account my disabilities... (Comment 2 in my post).
Unfortunately, I have to use the mouse with my left hand and keys with my right hand. For me to achieve using WASD requires the palm of my hand resting on the lower (nearer) keys which rather confuses the keyboard, the PC, and any application ~ Consequently, I have to use the cursor keys (bottom right of keyboard) with my palm resting on the desk. Also the cursor keys have clear space around them and so I cannot accidently press other keys at the same time.

Obviously, you were not aware of that limitation on myself.

I could be churlish and mutter about your software not complying with Disability Accessability Standards and Section 21, (reasonable adjustment) Disability Discrimination Act 1995; but...

a) I am having too much fun with Muvizu irrespective of difficulties, and;

b) I am sure you will get around to Key Mapping sometime when you are able to do so, and;

c) I recognise that development has to start somewhere...

Better something that works and is evolving, than something with Bells & Whistles and still vapourware!

Kind regards,

Hey!!!

I Think I have just thought of a solution!!!

I have Saitek SD6 Programming software for my controls.

I think I can reprogramme the keyboard myself using that.

I will let everyone know how I get on.

Kind regards,

Hi Y4ArtU,

I see your point. You did mention your disabilities, but you weren't clear as to what the problem was. I was trying to make the point that Muvizu does conform to standard navigation controls and that the strafe movement you wanted is available, but I missed the main focus of your original post and for that I apologise.

I can understand your frustration with the current keys. Don't tell anyone, but I personally don't like them either. I'd prefer to use A and D to rotate, Q and E to strafe, and R and F to move up and down. But I'm in a minority here, so I'd like to see a key remapping feature implemented soon too. Unfortunately, as mcmillan-ra mentioned, we are extremely busy with all the features that have been requested so far and we're only a small team so I'm afraid it's likely to happen later rather than sooner.

I believe earlier versions of Muvizu had strafing (sidestepping) on the left and right cursor keys, but it was changed in a recent release. The exact reason eludes me (and I'm posting from home at the weekend, so I can't check) but I think it was to offer more diverse controls, particularly when directing camera movement.

We do understand your needs, however, and as other folk on the forum will tell you, we do listen and respond to our users requests.

As a temporary fix, you can change the keybindings, but you'll need to do it the fiddly way using a text editor such as Notepad.

1) Look for a file called "MuvizuInput.ini"; it should be in a folder called either "C:\Program Files\Muvizu\MuvizuGame\Config" or "C:\Program Files (x86)\Muvizu\MuvizuGame\Config" if you're running a 64-bit version of Windows.

2) Make a backup copy of this file so you can undo any changes.

3) Open the file in Notepad.

4) Find these two lines, near the start:

  • Bindings=(Name="Right",Command="Axis aTurn Speed=1.0 AbsoluteAxis= 25 | Axis aCamTurn Speed=1.0 AbsoluteAxis=50")
  • Bindings=(Name="Left",Command="Axis aTurn Speed=-1.0 AbsoluteAxis= 25 | Axis aCamTurn Speed=-1.0 AbsoluteAxis=50")
5) Change them to this:

  • Bindings=(Name="Right",Command="Axis aStrafe Speed=1.0 | Axis aCamTurn Speed=1.0 AbsoluteAxis=50")
  • Bindings=(Name="Left",Command="Axis aStrafe Speed=-1.0 | Axis aCamTurn Speed=-1.0 AbsoluteAxis=50")
6) Save the changes and restart Muvizu. Your cursor keys should now strafe, like the A and D keys.

Hi Y4ArtU,

Welcome to Muvizu, and thanks for your insight. You raised some very important points. Accessibility is something that we do need to look into. Some people find the Muvizu UI intuitive, some people don't.

I've raised this with the developers, it would be really good if users have the option to re-configue the controls to their own preference.

It may also be that we don't have the best mapping at the moment. The problem, I guess, is that there are some conflicting conventions. We'll have a talk about this, and if you, or anyone else can make some suggestions that would make life easier for you, please get in touch.

Cheers,

Emily.
