Thanks, Pat. I appreciate the encouragement. I animated the camera. The music is from http://www.purple-planet.com/ I can't remember which royalty-free sites I got the sound effects from. I looked around a lot for the right ones. One day I will make a video of my time at sea. Seriously though I just sailed for fun, and the largest sail boat I ever owned was only 14 ft. in length, and I sailed around Long Beach, CA. It was a lot of fun. I really did not know what I was doing until a person from the Netherlands went sailing with me, and I thought for sure I would never see land again. Even in a 14 ft. sailboat you learn a lot of respect for the ocean, and how fickle the wind can be. I would never claim to be anything other than a novice sailor.

Now I spend time kayaking in a nearby lake that most people would call a pond because it is so small, and even more time working on my latest animation and getting to know how to use Muvizu, HitFilm, and Gimp.

I guess in reality, the ocean would have swells in the same direction the ship was leaning, so the technique of tilting the camera probably yields more lifelike results. Looks good to me, anyway!



Hello from the other Californian. I am about an hour to 2 hours from you depending on the 210 freeway! I have been sailing quite a bit just in the local So. Cal. waters and never all that far away from shore, so I know one thing about sail boats (hopefully more than one). They will lean with the wind and that is one reason for the keel to counterbalance the boat and help it stay on some sort of tack or path. However when there are big swells your boat will also pitch and roll with the swells, and that tests a true captain's clout.

I used to really enjoy watching The Deadliest Catch just to see ships vs the sea, and those crazy crab fisherman. They definitely did some pitching and rolling. I quit watching when I began speaking like them (ha, well to avoid it since that would not be popular where I work). Marc, I think you did a great job capturing the fury of the sea. She can be quite vicious and unforgiving.

I like the stylized water texture! I notice when the ship rocks, the direction of the water texture also changes... which prompts me to ask if you animated the rocking in Muvizu, or in your video editor? Please elaborate on how you "rocked the boat"

I've used it a couple of times for the video introductions I've had to upload for some online classes. My voice lip synced to a dog's body has been pretty popular with my classmates. I also made a short test movie that was more complex, a sailor on the deck of a ship in a storm who dives overboard. I hope to make some more projects soon.
