Yeah you're right. I'm not sure exactly when it happened but at some point they locked down the free version to only the bare minimum to force people to buy the new version. It was a good idea, as I discovered a wrinkle.
When I tried to load the clip into 2017 it stopped, saying there is a problem opening scene and to use Play+. I tried the clip in 2015 and it loaded fine. Not sure why. Problem of course, is that I do not believe it is possible to buy Play+ anymore. I'm using Play+ - and the full version of the new update seems to be noticeable bigger (626.504) bigger than the version from 2016.09.07 (605.488) that I'm using right now.

I downloaded - and installed it.

It opens- and works well - with my existing sets - including i.e. Rodrisilvas flying pigeons.
