Jim,
I suppose we are all get likely a bit miffed when some program tells us that our hardware isnt good enough for something. How dare it !, who does it think it is? Now that I have just swapped my graphics card for something more up to date - woops - it all works-- duh!- that was the cause all along. Sorry for all the flap.
The moral of this story is - is if your trusty machine is working OK with the supplied objects in Muvizu, dont assume that it will cope with importing even simple objects from sketchup or elsewhere.

Thanks again for all your help.

Geoff (Tangledbliss)

Hello again Geoff,

I spoke to one of the Devs and they have suggested updating your DirectX and Graphics card drivers.

The latest DX version can be downloaded from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en

You can get the latest NVIDIA drivers from:
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

And the latest ATI drivers from:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

If that doesn't work could you please e-mail the screenshot along with one of the objects and a note of what's happening (just in case someone else opens it) to bugs@muvizu.com ?

Take care,
-Jim

Jim,

I was going to send you a screenshot of the whole error message (I cant figure how to do that on here - can I email it?). The error message appears right at the end of the process when i try to import it into an empty muvizu scene. I have tried it with objects from sketchup wharehouse and even a simple box created in sketchup.

cheers

Geoff

Jim,
sorry this is dragging on. The bitmap location is fine. I think I was me telling to export 'selected' rather than the object as it stood, so that error message doesnt appear. However I now get one which feels a bit more fundamental telling me my graphics card doesnt meet the requirements for running Muvizu.
Also tells me Muvizu does not support vertex element type 11. I was trying to keep to fairly simple objects.
Its a reasonable spec machine and it manages fine with the supplied Muvizu objects and characters.
cheers

Geoff ( Tangledbliss)

Hi Geoff,

It's possible that the version of the exporter that you are using has the texture location set as somewhere else. You can check by opening up one of your .ASE files using a text editor or Notepad ++ and looking for these entries:

*SUBMATERIAL 0 {
*MATERIAL_NAME "<YellowGreen>"
*MATERIAL_CLASS "Standard"
*MAP_DIFFUSE {
*MAP_CLASS "Bitmap"
*BITMAP "C:\ut3\toto.bmp"
*UVW_U_OFFSET 0.0
*UVW_V_OFFSET 0.0
*UVW_U_TILING 1.0
*UVW_V_TILING 1.0

If the Bitmap location is different to that then it explains the "not found" error that you are experiencing.

You can either put the .bmp in the location specified in the file or edit the file to C:\ut3\toto.bmp - it's up to you.

Please let us know how you get on.
-Jim.

jim,
I have been using your tutorial about exporting from google sketchup. When I go to import into Muvizu it tells me it cant find the texture. I think I have been through every stage and placed my little pink square toto.bmp into a UT3 folder on the C drive. Any suggestions? If thats some sort of default texture shouldnt appear as that in sketchup? or does it only apply to exporting?

thanks again

geoff (tangledbliss)

Hello again,

I am happy to help - we would love to hear any feedback that you or the children have as we are trying to make Muvizu as kid-friendly as possible.

Emily actually worked alongside some children in Glasgow to make this video:

And Scott, a six year old visitor to the office made these videos with much earlier versions of the software:

If you have any other questions please let us know.

Take care,
-Jim.

Hi Tangledbliss, thanks for trying Muvizu.

There are quite a few different places that you can get models to import into Muvizu - not all of them are the correct format, so they need to be converted in another program, which varies in difficulty depending on the software that you use.

Dreeko made a thread featuring model websites:

http://www.muvizu.com/Forum/topic813-list-of-3d-object-websites.aspx#post3399

And I made a tutorial about using Google Sketchup and Models from the Google Warehouse:

http://www.muvizu.com/Video/12838/Importing-from-Sketchup-Part-1

If you have any other questions or suggestions please let us know.

Take care,
-Jim.
