The built-in textures and effects that get installed are minimal, BUT...

there is a link on the top right corner of the program that leads to a place where you can download and automatically install literally thousands of additional texture sets and effects! Most of which are tilable (great for putting grass and clouds in the environment)

There are also lots of building textures, many of which have see thru alpha, like fences etc that would be simple to slap onto a backdrop instead of creating a model... I think this will be very useful! Thanks again for pointing it out to us!

WOO HOO! ;-)

I found out how to make the background transparent so foliage images can be used in MUVIZU and you can see through the foliage as characters walk behind a bush or tree!

This video is a tutorial for a sister product called Howler... Particle9 is a subset of Howler, so the menus won't be the same, but the concept will work in Particle 9, you may have to experiment with the brush tool settings

Speaking of Howler... in my opinion this is one of the most innovative software packages I've seen in a long time! It's very object oriented and rules based, and the user can create their own rule sets that define how foliage and brushes and 3D landscapes and virtually everything is created!

And they have a way of starting with a flat graphic of fractal noise, then adding peaks and valleys to it based on light and dark colors to produce 3D topography, which can be exported as a Wavefront OBJ file! That would be very useful with Muvizu!

Given my philosophy that finding software which plays well with other software is the preferred way to build a strong set of creative options and tools for your video-making toolbox, I rate this software very highly! It adds capability that Muvizu doesn't have natively, so used together the result is bigger than the sum of the parts

I just got around to installing this product and giving it a brief test run, and I think it will be VERY useful for making the kind of backgrounds I need for Muvizu and Anime Studio sets. It's basically a PAINT style program (as opposed to drawing or photo editing) in that it provides a wide variety of brush styles and materials to paint with. A LOT of paint apps do that... But here's what's cool about this one:

Many of the brushes are not just static patterns... they are animated algorithms that change every time you use them! So if you are using a nature brush to create trees or bushes, they all look different and unique! No rubber-stamped look like you see in many apps!

Also, I notice that many of the brushes are motion sensitive... meaning, if you draw faster, the pattern spreads out more, which creates a feathery look.. and again, always different!

The nature brushes alone are well worth the free download!

In the past I have used nature backgrounds that were screen captured from the web, but that's really bad practice for a lot of reasons. With this tool, I should be able to rapidly create just about any background I need... and best of all... put the foreground, middle ground and background on separate layers in order to create a wide vista 3d effect as the camera pans the scene!

Can't speak for everyone, but for me this freebie is a keeper!

I'm posting this here because the thread started out with a FREE SOFTWARE OF THE DAY notice... and here's another one:

One of today's freebees is called PARTICLE 9, and it looks like it would be a useful tool for creating backgrounds in MUVIZU! Based on its demo video, it has a 3d terrain creator, brushes for painting foliage on alpha and a lot of tools for making general painting very fast

The ability to create foliage on foreground layers that characters can walk behind and still be seen partially through the leaves really opens up a lot of possibilities. I'd guess that using layered graphics on multiple backdrops to achieve a 3d look would be a lot less demanding on your computer than filling up a large scene with 3d objects. Plus, you don't need to know how to model if you take this route.

These videos show a background scene being created with Particle 9. It's free today. 'Nuff said.

and here's the link for the Freebie, in case you aren't on their mailing list:
https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/particle-9/

as always, freebee expires after today (4-1-2016)
edited by PatMarrNC on 01/04/2016

I don't think the lighting is that bad for real time, the water effects in particular are pretty cool. There are pretty compelling real-time effects that would be great to see in Muvizu. Muvizu's lighting though I think is the easiest of everything I use to get the results I'm after, Poser is a PITA at times in that regard. iClones whole UI kinda throws me off it though. I've come to appreciate Muvizu's full screen approach as I go on, it kinda keeps you seeing the bigger picture. I wish I could now get fullscreen view with floating pallets in Poser actually.

This is where I stand right now: I think I'm going to be focussing on learning Poser more, it is really great fun to manually animate, even doing stuff like animating my own water effects is pretty rewarding, and I will try and learn how to integrate that content with Muvizu. I didn't see a way to export animations from iClone with transparency or in image sequence layers, so I don't think I'll get much out of it unless I upgrade. Right now it shows Pro for only $120 in my account, if I had the funds I likely would impulse buy it. But that might be a mistake anyhow, damn my focus gets pulled away from my todo list constantly. Do I really need to invest in learning another platform? I think learning HitFilm would be more appropriate, and many of the animated effects I appreciate in iClone are likely much better created in HitFilm I think, and I could incrementally build up whatever tool kit I need with no upfront cost just to get started.

My productions are mostly intended to be ridiculous, so if I have to create new characters with head attachments instead of morphs, I feel like it adds to the silliness that I'm trying to achieve, and doesn't detract at all. Sure, I would appreciate any new features, and I expect that the new asset store concept will be helping that to happen; but I still have a lot to learn about what's already possible with Muvizu.

When I look at the amazing movies that have been made by the gurus here, it's evident that Muvizu's current potential is quite impressive, and the trend is in a positive direction. I might explore some other software, but I seriously doubt that I will abandon Muvizu. It's just too much fun!

Yes and dont get the indigo renderer its meant for still shots LOL. however iclone is not cheap its not expensive either its in the middle. Its the only real time engine out there that allows you to animate like you know everyone wants to. Up until iclone 6 the lighting has always been a bit of an issue. However unless you want to purchase stuff off the content store or marketplace instead of develop your own bits and pieces you will need the exchange. There are indeed people who do just use the content store and marketplace I dont think its the crowd requesting the changes in muvizu though lol.

Anyhow so if you want more ability the solution is to be blunt; to pay for it

You also need to afford the hardware to run it. Animation is hard work though and in the end as your ambitions and ideas grow so will the price tag to get them to become real. Unless you decide to do everything inside blender and do it all yourself. ...which is a possibility but not for the feint of heart and what you trade of in cost off software you most certainly will be paying to assemble a renderfarm

so long story short you want to make pretty pictures beyond what is available in muvizu then its gonna cost ya in time and money or both. So at the end of the day its a question about how much you are invested as a person into this process which no matter how you slice it will never be straight forward or easy.
edited by urbanlamb on 13/03/2016

I think it was only for that one day. They'll do it again, I suppose you just gotta look out for it. I've been watching the tutorials and messing around with it - basically everything that everyone always requests for Muvizu is already in iclone. The downside is that iclone (in general) is all but useless without the 3D Exchange program, which is expensive. Also the lighting in iclone 5 is rubbish, unless you get the indigo renderer which is available bundled within the Pro version...and so on. Iclone 6 has really good lighting, and a nicer interface, but the bundle you actually need to do what you'd expect with it costs $500. Iclone is not a cheap route to movie making, is what I'm saying

there are a lot of "new things" not in iclone 5 and the lighting in iclone 5 is a bit well not great although you can get it to work semi okay with some effort its just quite limited. However function wise they both work almost the same so dont take iclone 5 as being the features of iclone 6 .. that being said if you dont have a new pc and by new i mean a pc with a good cpu and a high end graphics card and by that i mean one with a minimum of 4 gig of ram that runs on the newer processors it wont be working very well for you.

I had a 660ti in my pc when i installed iclone 6 and it was not powerful enough so by new i mean very new like recently new

my currect pc which runs iclone 6 well is an new generation i7 with 6 quad cores, 16 gig of ram seems plenty although I guess if i added 32 it wouldnt hurt and my card is an nvidia 970. My previous system (the one that did not run it well had an older generation i7 , 12 gig of ram and an nvidia 660ti and it did not run iclone 6 well at all) so fair warning your pc has to be very modern

anyhow here is the feature matrix for the new iclone 6 and the 3d exchanges

http://www.reallusion.com/iclone/iclone_matrix.aspx

http://www.reallusion.com/iClone/3DXchange.html

It will run on lower end pc's but you wont be happy. So I say this so people understand you need to be able to afford a good pc or your gonna waste a lot of money and be complaining of crashes and bugs which are actually a result of the hardware your using. There are of course other bugs but iclone 6 is designed for up-to-date hardware.
edited by urbanlamb on 10/03/2016

I think the character creator and the toon packs also are necessary to make iClone into what I need, and once you get all that you have spent so much more than Muvizu to get something certainly able to surpass Muvizu but also something much more complicated. I'm stoked to have it, but I can't see it replacing Muvizu for what it does best, and definitely not comparable in price. Muvizu just needs more character content. Getting FBX props into Muvizu is easy, it is the characters that we can't create, and it is characters that I really need. A character creator addon for a premium price or something would be really welcome. Besides this, I think Muvizu should try searching through the Unity store for content developers and try and get them to release Muvizu-tailored collections through Muvizu's store. That would go a long way to making people see the scope of things possible in Muvize. Regarding props, they need some way to allow props to have connected but animatable doors, any FBX prop can do this in most other programs, but an FBX with doors won't work in this platform. Anyhow, bottom line, I'm rooting for Muvizu and I hope more content gets flowing, it has been months since the Chinese History set, which was excellent, more stuff like that from history and Muvizu gets more and more attractive for education and just more fun. A jungle set and assorted plants and stuff, an animated bird, really limited maybe, but make some things that just let you move eyes and heads, that should be easy to get going, mo animations to bake in, it would be really helpful. Anyhow, rambling, sorry. This is useful for all Muvizu'ers I think:

https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/

Here's a version comparison between Iclone 5 Standard and Pro but as Urbanlamb states you really need 3dxchange as well (to import stuff) unless you are prepared to spend lots in the content store and marketplace. I wish they would sell Muvizu animations on there.

https://www.reallusion.com/iclone5/iclone_matrix.aspx
edited by toonarama on 09/03/2016

I almost bought iClone6 recently, so this is pretty cool to have for free. My issue that prevented the purchase is that it costs a lot to get the product features to the point of creating your own comic characters and exhanging files with the outside world. The advice to get something liek Crazytake cheap and then get bigger discounts is what I had heard as well, so I eventually plan to get that, then wait for a killer sale. Now to see what it can bring to my Muvizu creations... I have DAZ, Poser, Blender, Muvizu... kinda swimming in apps right now, and the one thing that limits me is really writer's block. It definitely isn't lack of technology.

ohhh... OK... previous version to get more customers interested in the product.. that makes perfect sense and makes the download seem less like a trojan horse offer that nobody can refuse.

For those of you who like to make the Dreamworks -type animations, this is probably the right product for you. I'm basically a cartoonist looking for ways to animate my comic ideas, so the cartoonized actions and potato headed characters in Muvizu are perfect for my use.

It seems to me that for those who want more, the time saved in animation could easily get lost again in creating custom content. In contrast, there appears to be an abundance of relatively inexpensive and high quality content available for iClone. People who want to work in that environment might never need to make anything themselves.

But if they want to, they still can.

Bottom line, this is a no-brainer acquisition. Even at full price, Iclone seems to offer a pretty amazing cost / benefit ratio.

Damn. I'm too old for another software learning curve. Every time I think I'm ready to roll, something new comes along....

I dont know the rules they are applying but i am assuming it makes you a "customer" which immediately makes you eligeable for member pricing which is usually a huge chunk off the ticket price and is also the "upgrade" price. The way iclone works is you login and the pages with iclone 6 software or whatever will update to the upgrade pricing. They dont have an "upgrade" version they just discount the iclone 6 version to what it would be for an upgrade price

Members are redirected to this page http://www.reallusion.com/store/product.html?l=1&p=ic
for instance the member/upgrade price for me for iclone 6 pro is $119.00

I am assuming that this deal will make you an automatic member so that your eligeable for upgrade pricing and not paying the full wack. However if you want to use iclone and not be restricted your going to need to go for the iclone pro + 3dexchange pro package not just iclone which is just the engine and assets which you purchase and install. (well unless your not interested in importing anything then just get iclone pro)
edited by urbanlamb on 09/03/2016
