I keep telling myself I'll only run one more zone in Path of Exile 2, then an hour disappears. That's the trick of it: the game looks like the usual monster-smash loot chase, but it keeps nudging you into choices that actually matter. Even stuff outside combat starts to feel connected, like planning upgrades, trading, or grabbing a quick poe2 currency buy so you can test a new idea without waiting forever for the right drop.
Skills That Don't Care About Your Class The skill gem setup is the first big "oh, wow" moment. You're not picking a class and then living with its preset spell list. You slot an active gem, and that's your move now. So you can be a chunky melee character and still throw out lightning if you build around it. It sounds chaotic, but it's weirdly freeing. You'll mess up a few times, sure, but you learn fast because every swap feels immediate in play.
Support Gems Are Where Builds Get Personal Support gems are where I lose track of time. They don't just inflate numbers, they change how the skill behaves. A clean shot becomes a spread. A single projectile starts bouncing around. Sometimes it's a straight upgrade, sometimes it breaks your mana and you have to rethink the whole setup. That's the fun part. You start with "I want more damage," and you end up chasing a certain rhythm, like how the skill feels when you're kiting or when you're cornered.
The Passive "Tree" and the New Fight Tempo The passive tree isn't really a tree. It's a huge map of tiny decisions, and your starting point just pushes you in a direction, not into a cage. Two people can start as the same class and still end up playing totally different. Combat helps sell that freedom too. The dodge roll makes you pay attention, especially in messy fights where you'd normally just face-tank and hope. Trying different weapons changes things more than I expected; a spear fight and a crossbow fight don't feel like the same game.
Endgame: The Part That Keeps You Logging In Once the campaign's done, you can tell the real grind is built for long-term tinkering. Maps, modifiers, bosses that punish sloppy movement—there's always some new problem to solve. And when you're mid-respec or chasing one last upgrade, it helps knowing sites like U4GM are around for buying game currency or items so you can keep the momentum and get back to testing instead of staring at bad drops all night.
