Hi

Some time ago I revealed my personal approach to bypass muvizu limitation on wheels animation. As many of you know the trick was a sort of simulation using animated textures.
Today I present you a more flexible way of doing wheels animation without the need of AVI file or any other kind of movie.

The tuto is on my youtube channel and soon in Muvizu gallery:

Wow, Rod! You're an animation genius! Thanks for sharing these great ideas! This is very useful!

(I just added this to the WIKI on the USER CREATED TUTORIALS page)

I especially like the FLEXIBILITY This approach gives the director... you can programmatically change the speed of rotation as the car changes gears! Your other solution would require a separate video for each speed... but this approach doesn't require the overhead of any video at all!

I don't understand how you unwrapped the round shape into a rectangular shape that could be scrolled sideways... is that a setting in Blender?

(I understand how to make the tread part rectangular, it's the wheel's hub that remains a mystery to me...

Very nice thinking out of the box Rod! Good find!

Pat, if I understand correctly you need to make seams like the lines in this image if that is your 3d wheel object. The straight lines out from the center are the two short sides of the rectangle like seen on the right. The inner seam becomes the top and the outer seam the bottom.

No special setting in Blender. All hand made. The trick is to have a small discrete circle in the center. See pictures below.
Seams are in red. The rectangular shape has been perfected by hand.

This weekend I'm not working. So, I made another little video where camera capture "texture" is applied over custom eyes
The end result is here:

Very clever Rod! You're on a roll lately! One great idea after another... and I really like the flexibility you get from each of these procedures!

I think I understand now that I'll have to manually convert the circular UV to a rectangle... (I never would have thought of that in a million years!)

I experimented with your pigeon wing animation idea and tried to use it to animate the legs of a quadraped, but I must not be creating the right file format... it almost works, but I don't get a good solid texture like yours. At first I wondered if my computer can't handle the overhead; But your pigeons work on my computer, so it must not be the computer. Must be my ongoing inability to create an AVI that plays in Muvizu...

thanks Ikes.. that's a very good way of explaining the procedure! Not what I originally imagined, but certainly better than what I would have tried on my own!
