An extras generator. Two of your ubiquitous red boxes, placed off screen and randomly generated characters spawn and walk between the two boxes (one way or both). Good for street scenes.

Wouldn't it be easier just to add a character and move him around?
A crowd movement option would be nice though!

Come on - you know character movement is difficult at the best of times, let alone spending time getting extras to go the right place.

When we create characters who's purpose in the scene is purely to be standing around in the background chatting to another character or performing some other mundane task as an extra would in a movie, wouldn't it be nice if we could just stick them in the background and let them get on with it rather than have to animate everyone of them?

So here's an idea..

How about we have a mode for characters where we could make them an extra?
"What the hell are you gibbering on about now Dreeko?" I hear you cry.

Well Imagine you could prepare a characters actions as you do already but there was a tick box we could tick which would have that character perform all our chosen actions randomly throughout the scene without us having to direct the animation. With this in place we could just put them in place and let them get on with it and concentrate on animating the main characters.

This obviously would be even better if we could copy and past characters with their prepared actions included also.

So what do you all think of this one?

This is the main thing for me - imagine just creating a character that does certain actions. saving and then when required copying into a new set...no setup, no prep, just copy and paste...great for crowds as well..

Copy and paste characters and their actions would be great. Crowd scenes would be a breeze to produce. Being able to copy and paste actions on the timeline would be a pretty good tool too.

Sounds good for a few random extras in a big crowd to keep things real, but I also
Think a static extra, or static puppet prop model will help with system memory
Slowdown...

I have seen what can be achieved with the transparent video texture by toon,
Wow, why don't we all help each other out here?

Why don't we, or anyone who has a poweful pc do a large crowd scene?
Do it with a chroma blue or green, whack it through Vegas to make it a transparent, upload it for everyone to use, yippeeee!!! Problem solved?

we could do this special effects, animated props, daz models, just about anything!!

I think this could work the same way Fx home have done it on their website.
If you look and log in to their website you will find lots of useful stuff with chroma
Backgrounds, props, animations ect...

So, to help us in the short term, I think this transparent video texture could be the key.........

Cheers, art

Yes folks, this feature has been a long requested one, but the main point of my post was to suggest the automated animation feature for extras and to see what the other Muvizu-ers thought of that?

If you have a scene in a bar for instance and you have two main characters in shot but behind you would like to see many extras chatting, laughing etc, at the moment we have to prepare and direct the animation for every single character.
A feature which could make a character/extra become automatically animated without direction throughout the scene would be an immense time saver.

So to go with that would be a 'talking' action whereby the lips move without needing to sync with dialogue. Or maybe have unsynched-talk as a dialogue option.

Hopefully yes, that had occurred to me also

If you could prepare the character with the actions you wanted them to perform and they played them out randomly then if a character was cloned to create more extras then i imagine the random aspect would prevent them from performing the same actions at the same time.

I've already experienced having to animate every single "extra" in a bar scene and it was a fairly time consuming process. I would most definitely welcome an " automated animation feature for extras".

Yes poor old Mysto could have benefited greatly from this "extras" feature when animating garage band blues I'm sure!

I really don't mind having to animate each character separately at all. Animating the characters individually allows me to give them a more "natural" look within the scene. It does take quite a lot of time depending on how many "extras" are in the scene and what you have them doing but the end results are worth the effort.

There are times when an automatic function would come in handy but for now I'm quite happy with doing things the "hard" way.

Fair enough, but if the option was there it would be more than fantastic!

Yes, as I've stated in a few previous posts I too would welcome such a feature.
