I've looked at several of the tutorials and previous versions of Muvizu seem to have a fairly straight forward Depth Of Field control system where you can focus on your character and have the background blur out. In the most recent version there's many more controls yet I can't get the same effect as in the tutorials. I've tried every combination of sliders with the character in a medium shot and all I can do is blur the entire scene. Has anyone else found this to be an issue? Do you have some sweet spot settings for the cameras?

I tried a scene without snow effect and I got it to work finally.

For a camera a few feet from the character - I used these settings - Focal Distance - 0.0, Focus fall off - 2.8, Focal Range - 317.4, Scale - 2.0

Oh yeah I've been meaning to report that as a bug. Effects destroy any blur used in the depth of field.

Hi Robert, that's a common problem I think, dealing with the DoF sliders. Here is my bulletproof guide to setting focus in Muvizu :

Set Focus Distance to zero
Ignore Falloff, you never need to change it unless you're doing a tracking shot with the focus distance changing all the time. Its usually fine where it is, is what I'm getting at
Set Focus Range to almost zero (about 20 or 30)
Set Scale to max

Camera view is a blurry mess? Good, now increase the Focus Distance. You will see a band of focus moving through your set. Move it to your point of interest - you'll probably have to type in the exact number to get perfect focus.
Once you've got your target set, increase Focus Range to encompass whatever else you want in focus. Decrease the Scale to your tastes. And that's it, really Hope that helps.

Bob,

Yes - I use the same method as Ziggy to get my DOF sorted, but you are correct regarding DOF and effects.

I do not use Muvizu DOF if using the Muvizu effects (which I never really do) or if I'm using layers. I do all my effects and DOF in post production (in my case HitFilm).

I realise that if you're just starting out that's not much help!

Thanks for all the great responses! I'm not sure why Muvizu doesn't calculate the effects in the camera DOF. I try to do as much in camera as I can to limit the amount of post processing - I like to use After Effects for some stuff but prefer Vegas for straight editing. Aside from lip synch all audio is done in Vegas. My only rub with effects is the lack of a SCALE slider. I end up putting a whole bunch of effects for things like fog or snow. Those would be much easier with one effects cube and a scale.

Where did you get the audio? It works well with your story!.

I liked the overhead camera at the beginning when the central character died. It was reminiscent of all those stories you hear from people who have had near death experiences, and afterwards they describe the room as though they were viewing it from above.

That's looking brilliant so far!
The banded shadows (like with the spotlight over the bed in the first scene) are caused by the codec you used. I suggest using the image sequence output since Vegas has an import option for it and you don't have any issues caused by compression or the avi format.

What He Said AVIs are just so last year... Also a Vegas user, I only use PNG sequences now (to avoid the compression issues and time limits on clips, which is less than 20 seconds for 1080p).

Some of the renders are PNG sequences, some are AVIs. I'm having no luck rendering using the Dvix codec from Muvizu - locks up video in Vegas 12. I also have issues where the index gets corrupted on any files larger than 2 gig when rendering to AVI from Muvizu. If it's a short scene I'll render it as an AVI and then run it through bandifix, then it imports into Vegas properly.

Yeah, the 2gb limit thing is why a lot of us switched to exclusively image sequences, as well as removing all codec issues.

I have nothing technical to add to help out here, but I had to reply to your shared video sequence. Wow! It has a high wow factor. I love the all white scene, and the water scene. I guess I loved it all, and stand in awe of your skills. Getting my characters to walk where I want them to go is like training a puppy. They seem to go where their nose leads them, and so do my Muvizu characters. You made it look like something very easy to control.

Thanks for sharing. Your video was very emotional since I lost both of my parents only a few years ago. So it definitely can result in some emotional responses. Keep up the excellent animating, and then share your techniques and results.

I'm glad you liked the scenes. It's about to get very Christian - that's the purpose of the video so it won't go over well with everyone. It's my take on Biblical research, interviews with people who have passed and brought back to life and my own interpretation of how (in a light hearted narrative) it might all work. We won't know until we know but it is meant to give comfort to those who have lost someone. Here's the script if you'd like to read it.

The character animation controls on Muvizu are a challenge to get some things just right. BUT the speed and amazing platform (and price) is a great benefit to animators looking to produce content quickly with a tinge of professionalism.

I figured out a work around to the camera DOF not working when there are effects in a scene. Set your DOF settings BEFORE you add any effects to the scene. I was playing around with a new set and it worked! The background blurs properly while the character stays in focus and snow falls around him and in the background. Yea!
