I wasn't sure where to post this, so I posted here.

For a 5 minute (give or take a few minutes) joke or skit, including all sounds, titles, etc., how long does it take you (personally) to make a Muvizu movie, on average?

How long is a piece of string?

... It's really difficult to answer this one as there are so many factors at play eg. How many characters are involved, how many scene changes and therefore how many sets are required, Do you have to create custom textures etc etc..

I can only use my own vids as examples to give you some kind of answer - At one point I was creating more than one Muvizu video a week. I used to make short sketches the nature of most only required 2 or 3 characters and the same average number of sets. If you have the sets and characters ready to go then it should only take a couple of hours at most. When I was making the "On the News" videos which were a satirical look at the news of the day I would watch sky news in the morning and pick a few headlines then I would write a script figuring out what was the best and quickest way of producing it, record the audio, then I would set about making whatever sets, characters etc I needed and then it would be just a case of directing all of it together, outputting the video for edit and uploading to YouTube.

From watching the news to having the sketch online took on average between 3 and a half to 4hrs tops. It had to be that quick because it was topical.

Hope that helps

Cheers

At the moment I'm running at about 2 minutes a month. I'm anticipating getting this up to 4 minutes a month early next year.

Looking at it written down is really quite depressing.

wow. i take my hat off to you. that is some serious time span.

the longest ive worked on a project is about 5 months (the evil dead) and its still sitting on my hard drive unfinished but theres about 45mins done. just no ending which will probably be another 20 odd mins. it will get done one day when i have time and stop faffing around starting new projects before i finish old ones Big Grin
my last video i think took just under 2 months and it was 12minutes long but that includes making 95% of the props from scratch. remastering the audio from some crackly old rubbish recording to something listenable and a few custom textures.... making sound effects.... etc etc. in contrast my classic kirk fights 1 took a few hours of animating time. it took longer to make a gorn than it did to make the video.

at the end of the day whatever effort you put into making something is totally your choice. as dreeko said "how long is a piece of string" well that sums it up perfectly. there is no time limit. it takes as long as it takes.

Thank you, ukBerty and fazz68. I really appreciate the responses.

My last little Muvizu project (Spiderbomb Review) clocked in at 4 minutes and took me about 2 lazy weeks, if I recall, but there was no walking or camera movements, and only a few custom items.

It's been 3 years so far, but that includes a lot of script development. I have 12-18 months left.

The trouble is, the better I think it's getting the better I want it to be !

I should be able to show something at Christmas......

HayManMarc!

Remember that there are always shortcuts to be had eg using backdrops instead of building whole sets, only building partial sets etc

If you are only going to show the corner of a room then only build the corner. You don't have to create the whole compartment.

HayManMarc, it's been 2 years and counting for my current project, but you knew that already You (and the other cast members) should finally see your voice in action very soon...

My last Mysteries of Science vid (the one with the world getting blown up) took about 2 - 3 weeks for it's 4 minutes, and the 5 minutes of Death Star Canteen took 4 weeks start to finish (and I had zero Star Wars stuff on my machine for that one to begin with). Ten Second Superhero took a week to build the set, and then an hour to shoot it - it's all about content, really, and how deep you want to go in terms of presentation. As you know, I go fairly deep Big Grin

This is the trick, really. If you can be on the ball with your topic, in this case news, and you have a satirical bent ... actually, let's lay this out:
  • scriptwriting
  • voice talent
  • film direction/editing
  • lighting direction
  • camera/dolly operation
  • 3D-modelling
  • humour
  • ... a mission to create

This is when Muvizu works. The thing is, though, that collaboration can achieve this trick for us lesser mortals who do not possess all of these talents as individuals. Personally, I believe Dreeko to be some sort of voodoo or witchcraft aberration, so we should drown him.
Regardless of his fate, though, don't blame the software if you can't make it do what the Ambassador can make it do. As a great man said, "Bang the rocks together, guys!"

Muvizu was conceived in the hope that users would collaborate, and enjoy doing so.

Hi,

My most recent Dalek video took around two months (I think) to produce, but that was roughly once or twice a week. That includes Fazz making most of the props (thanks again Fazz).

However, I used to make some sketches in around a week each.

It's hard to say exactly how long a 5 minute video take. I've done things that have taken only an hour or so to finish and other things that have taken well over a month. I still have a few works in progress that I have been working on for well over a year.

One great thing about Muvizu is that you can create things as simple or as complicated as you like. All you have to do is put in the effort. The main thing (to me anyway) is to just have fun with it.

I have to agree that it really depends on how much effort you put into your video on how long it takes. After awhile somethings, dare I say becomes " 2nd nature like" when making a video because you know already a work around or shortcuts or whatever. So that cuts some time off production. Currently the project I am working on is over 6 months in the making, My longest project yet.

I think I can spend more time on scripts than I do on a movie lol. I have tons of scripts that I wrote and still spend a lot of time tweaking before It's ready for production.

I normally expect to take around 1 week to produce 1 minute of half-decent vid. I struggled with Muvizu at first, because the pointless collision system makes it very tricky to build sets without destroying them halfway through by careless placement of one element that then knocks the others out of position; something which you can't just "undo".

Kind words Pyrrho (apart from the drowning suggestion! Lol!)

On the topic of how long it takes to create videos - Sometimes a deadline (self imposed or otherwise) can help to focus production and force you to come up with solutions or workarounds to problems which otherwise you could spend months on just plodding through.

For the video below I had 4 days to produce from concept to completion.

The Bell that Never Rang:

The video has 13 different sets which I had to create along with the audio and an original poem etc etc

It was a tight squeeze but it was completed on schedule.

It's a bit ropey in areas but it did the job at the time.

Hi, I get limited creative time so making sure that time is spent on a worthwhile project is the most important thing I think.

I do the script, then I leave the script to soak! Maybe a week....maybe more
I read the script again, then if I'm happy, I do the voice work, done.

Next, the sets, and props... I only do half sets if need be, why waste disk space?
If I'm happy with the sets, lighting, staging, camera positions, then I leave Muvizu for a week and think about the camera shots.
Maybe I might do a little crappy storboard for the camera shots.
when I'm satisfied, then I can mostly shoot and direct my videos in two nights.

So, for most of my Muvizu work, It takes me around 1 to 2 months.

So, for me its usually the idea, concept, and preparation that takes the longest.

But, I'm hoping to whack out videos quicker in the future....

here's hoping!
